This song was first crafted somewhere around 1640 AD by a Jesuit name Jean De Brebeuf, on the shores of Lake Huron, Ontario. He used the music of an old French traditional song "Une Jeune Purcelle" and came up with the text in Wendat (the native language) so that the Huron people could understand the words. in 1649 he and some other Huron captives were killed by the Iroquois, but his song has survived all this time and has been sung the world over every year. The haunting carol and story truly capture the lore, mystery and messiness of the origins of Canada. If you can stomach all of that... :) it is simply just a gorgeous song for this time of the year!
